Steel buildings are everywhere in Okmulgee County: shops and warehouses along US-75 and US-62, equipment buildings on farms and ranches, churches, offices and small businesses. Bare metal heats up fast in the summer sun and gets cold quickly in winter, so uninsulated buildings are expensive to heat and cool and uncomfortable to work in.
The bigger problem is often condensation. When warm, humid air inside meets cold steel, water forms on the roof and walls and drips onto equipment, inventory and floors. Over time that leads to rust, ruined materials and mold. Fiberglass blanket insulation helps until the facing tears or a seam opens, then condensation returns.
Closed-cell spray foam bonds directly to the steel, seals every seam and fastener, and keeps the interior surface warm enough that condensation stops. We give every metal building a free site visit and a written estimate that spells out foam thickness and total square footage.
Okmulgee tip
Ask about fire code before you insulate a building used by the public or for business. Some uses require a thermal barrier or ignition barrier coating over the foam, and it is easier to include in the plan up front.
Metal Buildings That Benefit Most
- ✓Shops and warehouses with dripping roofs
- ✓Buildings with torn or sagging fiberglass blankets
- ✓Workspaces that get too hot by early afternoon
- ✓Churches, offices and stores with high utility bills
- ✓Ag buildings storing feed, equipment or vehicles
- ✓New metal buildings that need to meet energy code
How Thick Should the Foam Be?
For condensation control in an unheated building, about 1 inch of closed-cell foam on the roof and walls is often enough. It keeps the steel warm and seals panel seams for the lowest cost.
Buildings that will be heated and cooled usually get 1.5 to 3 inches, roughly R-10 to R-20. Open-cell foam is generally not recommended directly on metal because it absorbs moisture. Many owners put more foam on the roof, where most summer heat comes in, and less on the walls.
